Economics

Economics gives the student an insight into economic, social and political changes.   It is also useful for anyone considering a career in the broad field of commerce/business studies a conjoint Law/Commerce Degree.

Year 11 — Level 1 NCEA

Aims:

  • To develop an understanding of why and how people, as individuals and groups, choose to satisfy their wants by allocating and managing scarce resources in the context of the New Zealand economy.
  • To enable students to become aware of the changing nature of the economic environment and to take an effective part in economic activity and to contribute to economic well-being.

Year 12 — Level 2 NCEA  (This course is open to all Year 12 students)           

Aim:
To allow students to explore the economic issues of trade, growth, inflation and inequality.

Skills:

  • Able to define and measure these issues and understand their causes and possible effects.
  • Develop an awareness of government policies to address these issues.
  • Be able to recognise the nature of the economy,  to examine what effect policies have and to appreciate unequal consequences.

Year 13 — Level 3 NCEA   (Students need Level 1 and/or Level 2 Economics)

Aim:
To enable students to take an effective part in economic activity and contribute to future economic well being.
Students will develop -

  • Thinking skills in the application of principles, concepts and simple analytical techniques to current economic issues.
  • Investigative skills related to economic, social and political events.
  • Statistical skills when selecting, interpreting, analysing and evaluating statistical data.
